Imani, who volunteered at Townsville Conservation Park, is one of them and sums up her experience: "The best part was meeting six strangers and coming out of it with six new friends." Apart from spending an adventurous time and making new friends, many volunteers also cherish the feeling of learning something about the environment and contributing to its protection. Amber, from Arizona, thinks "This program has taught me a great deal about conservation and what it takes to keep parts of a country safe for animals and plants. Life is too precious not to help the world and give something back." Especially young people who set out on a gap year feel that volunteering also makes a difference for themselves. "I've grown as a person and conquered so many fears," says Maggie from Canada. And of course it's not all about hard work. As Ben from South Africa puts it, he had "a blast" and learned lots about himself, others, and the "great Aussie land".
